Joyce Tyldesley was born in Bolton, Lancashire. She studied archaeology at Liverpool University (BA) and Oxford University (D.Phil). She is currently Professor of Egyptology at the University of Manchester, where she teaches students worldwide on an innovative suite of online courses.
Joyce has written a series of academic yet accessible books on ancient Egypt, including several books for children. Her 2008 book Cleopatra: Egypt’s Last Queen was a Radio 4 “Book of the Week”; her 2013 book Tutankhamen’s Curse: The Developing History of an Egyptian king (published in the US as Tutankhamen) won the Felicia A. Holton Book Award given by the Archaeological Institute of America.
A participant in many radio and TV broadcasts, Joyce was awarded the OBE in the 2024 New Year Honours List for services to Egyptology and Heritage.
