Friday 4th February 2022

Puffin has acquired two books by Hayley Hoskins, an “exciting new voice” in historical middle-grade fiction.

Assistant editor Katie Sinfield acquired world English rights from Megan Carroll at Watson, Little. The first novel, THE WHISPERLING, will be published on 1st September 2022.

THE WHISPERLING, for readers nine to 12 years old, is an “immersive mystery” filled with humour and character which follows an young girl’s adventures in Victorian Bristol.

“Haley had my attention from the first sentence of THE WHISPERLING,” said Sinfield. “I was immediately drawn in and held captive by her witty voice and atmospheric writing. Peggy, a 12-year-old girl with a special gift in Victorian England is funny, sassy, vulnerable and strong and her story, with its themes of friendship and bravery, feels incredibly timeless.”

Carroll added: “I completely fell in love with THE WHISPERLING when Hayley first sent it to me – it’s warm, authentic, thrilling, and such a fun read.”

Hoskins commented: “I love all things creepy and have squashed some of my favourites – fake clairvoyants, eerie houses, dastardly villains and all the ghosts – into this tale of gothic girl power. I can’t wait for readers to join Peggy on her quest through spooky Victorian Bristol to save her best friend. I couldn’t be more delighted that THE WHISPERLING found its home at Puffin – my publisher of dreams. Their care, enthusiasm and support has made for a joyous process and is the ultimate reward after so many years writing and hoping.”
