Steven Veerapen

Dr Steven Veerapen is a historian of early modern British history. He has a first class BA (Hons) in English Studies from the University of Strathclyde, an MLitt with Distinction in Renaissance Studies, and a PhD from the University of Strathclyde. His doctoral research focused on slander and sedition in Elizabethan legal, ecclesiastical, and theatrical history, investigating in particular how Elizabethans across the social spectrum slandered, sued, and spoke badly of one another (and their queen). As a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Strathclyde, he teaches and works across both historical fiction and nonfiction; his fiction includes the Anthony Blanke murder mysteries (set in the reign of Henry VIII) and his most recent nonfiction includes Witches: A King’s Obsession and Overlord: The Life and Reign of Henry VIII. He has also written for Iain historical Dale’s anthologies (Kings and Queens, The Generals, and Powerbrokers & Political Fixers), and contributed a chapter to The Palgrave Handbook of Shakespearean Biofiction. He has appeared on television in Judi Dench: Shakespeare, My Family, and Me and Queen James and been published in such magazines as History Today. His research interests are currently focused on Anglo-Scottish relations across the tumultuous reigns of the Tudors and Stuarts.
